Weekend Adventurer

Another first in my goal to get winter exercise out of the basement!
First time on skis in probably 15 years.
It was fun once I got a little confidence. Only lasted 4 runs before the legs and feet gave out, but I WILL be back!
I didn't fall once!
The Value Village $8 snow pants have been a great buy this winter!

My cabled "Rosie" hat all done, full of mistakes, but done. Looking forward to picking up some better yarn (than the $5 Walmart acrylic) this weekend while we are in Edmonton and making it again.

Walking on Water

It's Family Day long weekend here in Alberta, so we got out and had a few adventures.
On Saturday we took a little drive and crossed an ice bridge, a first for me! In the summer months there is a little ferry operating here and we have been on it many times to go across to one of our favourite camp sites.

I am standing in the middle of the river looking south.

Our Sunday hike took us out on to the Heart River, a small tributary of the Peace River.

Unless we get another hard freeze (which I hope not!) we won't get out on it again this winter.

Lots of sunshine and scenery along the way.

Another first today, snow shoeing! A free lesson at our local museum, put on by The Ministry of Environment/ Sustainable Resources. It was lots of fun and we will definitely be buying a couple of pairs for next winter.

What a weekend full of firsts for me, knitting my first ever cables on what will be a beret! Not much quilting getting done as I just want to knit!

My lovely hubby modelling the hat from the last post, he was quite tickled it was for him.

Less than two weeks now til our big trip, getting really excited for warm sunshiny adventures.

Winter walk

In September I spoke to my family doctor about how tired I am of being overweight and asked for some help. We chatted a bit and he challenged to to lose 10lbs by Christmas.
I did that am an now down 17lbs, heading for 50 by the end of the year.

I have been working away in our basement gym since the beginning of December and I have to tell you that walking on the treadmill every day is getting really old!
SO
On February 6 I participated in Alberta's Winter Walk Day, and did a great hike in the hills with about 20 people and what felt like as many dogs!

Yesterday was a gloriously sunny, mild day after many, many, bitterly cold and snowy ones so I decided my family would go out and enjoy that walk together.

I have to say, this beats the heck out of the treadmill in the basement ANY day of the week!
Now if my dogs would just stick around instead of chasing deer it would be perfect!

Most of the trail is a track like this one that the snowmobiles use,

but a section of it is a game trail, I stepped off to show you how deep it is. This is just the current layer, I am sure there is at least that much more under the last thaw and freeze!

This is a great shot of a portion of our little town, and the frozen Peace River,
click on it to see a larger version.

Looking forward to lots more sunshine adventures in Belize in three short weeks!

Wow

Where have the last two weeks gone?
I guess, getting back into the swing of back to work and starting therapy on my hands to get full movement and strength back. It's slow but it's coming, I am happy the symptoms are all gone. Have been working on lots of things a little at a time, but nothing finished!

This is a sneak peak at my current canvas in progress.

The first circle game block completed, minus borders. The directions leave all the borders to the end but I think I will do them as I get two or three done. Hand sewing is still slow so not much hexie progress yet.

and here is block two, just loosely laid out, but not stitched.

The machine stitching is also slow on the baby quilt, only about an hour each time I sit down, not back to marathon sessions here either. All the centre beige squares are quilted with "lollipops" from  Leah Day's Free Motion Quilting project. A little hard to see in this photo, but hopefully you get the idea. The strip sections have been picked out twice now as I am still unhappy/undecided with what should go in there.......really wanted to expand and try new patterns, but of course I want it to be perfect too!!

I have a real thing for string quilts lately (good thing, I have LOTS of scraps to use up!) and recently purchased this book.

A pineapple log cabin has been on a my bucket list a LONG time.........

and I have finally started. This quilt will need 224 of these 5.5" blocks!
2 down, 222 to go!

Knitting really seems to be the best therapy at the moment so this is what I work on in the evenings until my hands are hexie worthy again. It will be a toque (woollen winter hat for non Canadians!) for my hubby. Learning to knit on two circular needles on this project.

The sun is shining, the snow is melting, it is a glorious day here in the north!
